The Bentota Odyssey: A Tale of Fellowship, Food, Fine Leadership, and the Slight Edge
A Spectacular Triumph of Spirit
Our recent excursion to Bentota and Colombo was a resounding success—or more accurately, a "200% triumph". We returned with hearts brimming with radiant joy and, perhaps, a few extra pounds as souvenirs of the magnificent local gastronomy. The trip was concise yet enchanting, leaving us with a lifetime of memories packed into a few sun-drenched days. "Slight Edge" (Mr. Edge) is truly happy and back on top of the world once again!
The Heart and Soul: Our Lovely Anns and Annettes
A special note of profound affection is reserved for our lovely Anns and Annettes, whose uninhibited participation and infectious enthusiasm were the true pulse of the trip. The Annettes (our fantastic kiddos) brought a vibrant energy that made every moment feel even more spirited. Their presence, along with the warmth and grace of the Anns, ensured a constant state of high morale and "wonderful camaraderie," turning every gathering into a celebration of our extended Rotary family.
The Architects of the Adventure
The seamless execution of this odyssey was guided by a trio of exceptional leaders:
- President Rtn. Radha Krish: Our luminous "Superstar" led with a clarity and commitment that was nothing short of symphonic. As members, we realized that "when Mozart is around, you don’t try to play the music… you pause and experience Mozart". Known also as "Rajamata," her selflessness ensured her personal love for Sri Lanka was recreated for us with even greater magnitude. Her planning was so precise it could serve as a masterclass for Google Maps.
- ISD Rtn. Meiyappan: Despite his own demanding international travel schedule, his presence provided an "international standard" sophistication, making every member feel like VIP tourists throughout the journey.
- Chairman Rtn. Muthu Krishnan: The unassuming cornerstone of the trip, Muthu’s patient and steady coordination of the "unseen" backend work kept the gears turning flawlessly.
Guidance and Operational Excellence
We were bolstered by the steady support of our senior leaders—CLF PP Rtn. Sathish, Advisor PP Rtn. Sridhar, and PP Rtn. Mothish—who served as exceptional moderators and pillars of strength. Our travel partner, Gopal, also deserves immense credit for his meticulous arrangements, from the riverside rooms and lavish resort stays to the delectable exotic meals. The local guide and his team further enhanced the experience with their enthusiastic and unwavering support.
Ethereal Experiences and Surprises
The itinerary was a kaleidoscopic blend of adventure and tradition:
- The Unique: From a baby crocodile resting on our shoulders to boat rides through mangroves, spice gardens, and moonstone mining, the trip was filled with entrancing moments.
- The Ethereal: President Radha floored the group with two nights of beach festivities, including an exotic, romantic, and psychedelic celebration under the Budha Poornima full moon.
- The Transit: Even the travel was an event, featuring a "Bar aboard the bus" to ensure spirits remained high.
- The Prestige: We also honored our Rotary roots with a formal flag exchange with the 97-year-old Rotary Club of Colombo.
The Guardians and the New Stars
"Radha’s Warrior Gang"—comprising Dharma, Riyaz, Sampangi, Muthu, and Muruga Pandian—resolutely "held the fort" (which was famously made of all shapes of bottles) throughout the journey.
However, the most delightful revelation was the "New Gang"—Raghu, Punithan, and Surendran—who dived into the festivities with gusto. A special mention goes to Dr. Elengkumaran, the true "surprise of the pack," for his extraordinary involvement and spirit.
In the end, as the collective verdict suggests: "Trip super… planning super… team super… next trip eppo (when)?".
